For those who don’t know you introduce yourself.
Hey! I’m Smashby and I guess now I’m introducing myself as a British queer country pop artist!
You have a brand new single out tell us about it?
I do! It’s called ‘Love Myself (How I Used To Love You) it’s about learning to unlove someone from your past and starting to learn to love yourself instead.
You have performed at lots of Prides this year why are pride events so important?
I love Pride events so much, as a queer artist getting to be a part of so many people’s Pride memories is really special to me! Pride is a super important place especially for people who are looking to expand their queer circle of friends, I’m so grateful to get to perform at them.
Who would you love to duet with?
So many people but I’ve always loved Miley Cyrus, I’m super inspired by so many country artists too like Dasha, Megan McKenna and Alana Springsteen.
You mention it’s a new beginning for you with this single how come?
This does feel like a new beginning for me, earlier this year I scrapped a 3 year long music project! I really struggled to write a song during the pandemic I had no inspiration to just write something fun or sexy and that’s all I thought people wanted from me. So I started working with songwriters and just recording songs that were given to me but I wasn’t connected with them. Then on New Year’s eve 2023 I was heartbroken and the only way I knew how to process it was songwriting so I finally did it! I just wrote how I felt no filter and it felt great! The songs were country pop which wasn’t the plan but it just came out of me so J leaned into it and now I have a whole new sound and I’ve never felt more proud of myself as an artist.
What are your plans for 2025?
So Love Myself is the first single from my new EP which will be coming out next year after I complete filming for a TV show I'm on...that's all I can say right now about that!! There's a lot more music I’m working on with So Fierce Music, Velvet Code and Emmie Jay! I’m literally so excited to share this new chapter in my music with everyone.
